On August 29th, from 9 am to 4 pm, the 13th annual Open Air Indian Art Market will be held outside Qualla Arts and Crafts Mutual. Visitors can meet some of the member artists, shop their wares, and enjoy live craft demos including beadwork, woodwork, stone carving, jewelry making, basket weaving, and pottery. There will also be live music during the day, and traditional Cherokee dinners for sale made by members of the North American Indian Women's Association (NAIWA). The event is free and open to the public.

Qualla Arts and Crafts Mutual, the nation's oldest Native American arts cooperative, turns 70 this year! See the masterful work of over 250 artists showcasing the finest handmade baskets, pottery, weaving, carvings, jewelry, and more. From award-winning, world-renowned artists to up-and-coming Third Generation members, the craft traditions on display go back over 11,000 years--a living legacy of Cherokee creation. 

Learn Eastern Band of Cherokee pottery styles, the history of the craft and more at the first Didanisisgi Pottery Festival April 16th. Several renowned potters will be sharing their techniques in on-site demonstrations and will have their work available for sale along with traditional Cherokee cuisine served by The North American Indian Women’s Association (NAIWA).

Tara McCoy began learning the art of traditional Cherokee pottery in school on the Qualla Boundary. Over the years she honed her techniques through classes at the Cherokee Pottery Guild and by talking to other potters. We spoke with Tara just before the festival about the development of her craft, her process for pit firing pottery, and the pride she takes in being part of the tradition of Cherokee crafters.

The Oconaluftee Indian Village in Cherokee, NC, is so much more than a place.
