The Tim Hill Memorial Trout Tournament is officially happening!

Tournament trout fishers, it’s time to celebrate and compete. Cherokee’s Fisheries & Wildlife Management Division has just announced that the Tim Hill Memorial Trout Tournament is taking place, despite ongoing concerns related to COVID-19. The biggest adjustment you’re likely to notice will happen after you’ve caught your fish and you’re ready to turn in your tags. Let’s take a quick look at that procedure:

First, you may turn your tags in on tournament days only, from 3-6 p.m.

Simply:

  • Head to 88 Council House Loop, Cherokee NC, which is located next to the Veterans Park/Council House entrance, across the road from the Cherokee Welcome Center.

  • Pick up and fill out a sign-in sheet and a W-9 form at the parking area entrance.

  • Place your completed sign-in sheet, W-9, valid permit, proof of registration, and colored tags in the envelope provided to you at the entrance. (Please note: We know you’re proud of the fish you’ve caught, but we only need to see tags!)

  • Drive around the building to the drive-thru window.

  • Hand your envelope to a friendly staff member at the window, where we’ll also distribute the cash prizes.

Who’s Tim, and why are we honoring him?

As many of you know, this tournament honors Tim Hill, a longtime employee at our very own trout hatchery who sadly passed too soon. Several years ago, Cherokee’s Fisheries & Wildlife Management Division created this fun and lucrative tournament in his name.

Did we mention the $10,000 purse?

With a registration fee of $15 and a two-day fishing permit for $17, you’ll be fishing for your share of $10,000 by catching beautiful trout in rivers all across the Qualla Boundary (excluding the 2.2 miles of catch-and-release waters), which will be stocked with tagged fish. When you catch one, you redeem it for cash prizes. Register anywhere fishing licenses are sold or at FishCherokee.com by Friday, July 10, 2020. Fishing will start one hour before sunrise and end one hour after sunset each day. Open to all ages and for all legal fishing methods.
